Furnishing Your First Home: Where to Start

It's tempting to furnish a new home from the living room out: a sofa, a coffee table, something for the walls. In practice, the rooms you use every single day deserve the budget first, and for most people that means the bedroom before anything else.

A good mattress is the single item most likely to affect how you actually feel day to day, so it's worth prioritizing over furniture that's mostly seen rather than used. Everything else (a wardrobe, a proper desk, decor) can reasonably wait a few months without costing you anything but appearance.

Budget in stages rather than trying to furnish every room at once. A simple, practical starting setup (bed, basic storage, a place to eat) covers the essentials; the rest can be added as the budget allows, without the pressure of getting an entire home "finished" in one trip.

If you're starting from nothing, foam mattresses are usually the most practical first purchase: lighter to move in, easier to budget for than spring, and available in the sizes most first apartments actually need.
