A living room doesn't need a renovation to feel more comfortable. A few smaller changes usually move the needle more than one big one.
1. Layer textures. A mix of cushions, a throw, and a rug reads as far warmer than a room with one texture repeated everywhere.
2. Fix the lighting. Swap a single overhead light for two or three smaller lamps: warmer, more flattering, and easier to adjust for the time of day.
3. Prioritize seating comfort over looks. A sofa or cushions that are genuinely comfortable to sink into matter more to how a room feels than how symmetrical it photographs.
4. Add a rug, even a small one. It anchors the seating area and takes the bare, unfinished edge off a hard floor.
5. Declutter before you decorate. An empty surface reads as calmer than a full one, no matter what's on it. Clearing first often does more than anything you'd add afterward.
